In Memory of Richard W. Greer

On the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, Richard W. Greer passed away unexpectedly at the age of 76.

Rich was born in Washington, D.C., on July 23, 1947, and grew up in Lanham, Md., and Seabrook, Md. He attended DuVal High School, in Lanham, class of 1965. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in soology and botany. Upon graduation, he began teaching dcience at Charles Carroll Middle School for 10 years and biology at Parkdale High School for 18 years. During his career he also coached golf, basketball and baseball.

Rich was an avid Terps fan and followed Orioles baseball all his life.

His true passion was fly fishing. He could often be found fishing on the Potomac River and the streams of Maryland, North Carolina, as well as Lake Auman. He had a deep love for our National Parks, in particular, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Tetons, Bryce and Zion National Parks. He often said, “the outdoors was his church, where he could feel God’s presence.”

On Dec. 23, 1972, after a whirlwind courtship, Rich married Fran White, of Arlington, Va. They settled in Olney, Md., where they raised their daughter, Kelly.

Shortly after Rich’s retirement from Prince George’s Co. school system, Rich and Fran moved to Seven Lakes, where he found the perfect environment to fish and play golf. In 2002, he was recognized for his contributions as a member and co-chairman of the Lake Auman Sports Club.

Rich is survived by his loving wife, Fran, of 50 years. 

He was predeceased by his beautiful daughter, Kelly; and his parents, retired Secret Service agent William Robert Greer and Ethel Oxley Greer.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Seven Lakes Chapel in the Pines, 581 Seven Lakes Drive, Seven Lakes, N.C.  27376.
