Aging Outreach Services and Southern Pines Public Library are hosting two free seminars to help families understand and navigate the complexities of family estrangement.

“Family Estrangement: A Journey of Acknowledgement” will focus on navigating the challenging journey of estrangement for parents and estranged adult children, with the goal to acknowledge the variety of issues and emotions an estranged person experiences.

Seminars are scheduled for 4 p.m. on March 18 and 25 at the Southern Pines Public Library, 170 W. Connecticut Ave.

Jennifer Tyner, lead care manager with AOS Care Management, will lead the seminars. Tyner has 20 years of experience supporting families as they navigate the challenges of aging. She recently attended an Aging Life Care Association presentation focused on the parents of estranged adult children. Throughout her career, Tyner has worked with families who are dealing with estrangement and has seen the toil unresolved issues bring as older family members age.

“My goal for these seminars is to provide our community with a forum that allows estranged families to break out of their isolation, find a community where they can share their experiences and hopefully take one step closer to coming to terms with their personal journey,” said Tyner. “ I hope that if you are suffering in silence, you will join us, learn you are not alone and are able to leave this series with a better understanding of how to heal.”

Each seminar will focus on sharing information and creating a support system. The March 18 discussion will focus on a review of Fe Anam Avis’s PEAK Parents of Estranged Adults Kids A Resource for Recovery. The March 25 discussion will focus on the journey of healing and acceptance.

Tyner said that her professional experience brings an “understanding that many people are suffering in silence about estrangement and need to learn they are not alone.”

Each seminar will include time for questions and opportunities for attendees to share information. For more information, the community is invited to contact Jennifer Tyner directly at (910) 692-0683 or JenniferT@AOSCareManagement.com.
