Older adults looking to kick the impacts of aging to the curb can enroll in a new class designed specifically for their needs at Goshin Dojo in Seven Lakes.

Sensei Frankie Tapia designed the “Karate for Seniors” class in response to interest from the community.

“A couple of months ago, we had an influx of people in the older crowd wanting to get information about our classes. The way our current adult class is structured is not what they were looking for,” said Tapia.

Answering the demand for a shorter class tailored for those 60 and up, Tapia created this new opportunity.

The class, which begins Sept. 3, will include a light warm up, different aspects of karate, stances and a few self-defense techniques. It will not include any sparing exercises.

“As we age, we lose muscle mass,” said Tapia. “So we will incorporate some strength training and mobility exercises to decrease fall risk, all while having fun.”

Participants will strengthen their legs, joints and cores and improve balance. Tapia adds that learning and practicing the kata, or karate’s prescribed sequence of stances and movements, is also beneficial for sharpening memory and focus.

All ability and experience levels are welcome, even those who have never taken a karate class before.

“We were all brand new at some point. Just take those first steps in the door,” Tapia said. “It’s a friendly environment, and we will welcome you with a smile.”

Modifications will be made for those with mobility concerns. Tapia says ailments such as a trick knee or a wonky back are common among his students.

“We encourage people to stay active. The best thing to do as we age is to move around,” he said. “Karate provides a well-rounded approach to health. It is physical but it also provides mental health as well.”

Tapia, who earned the rank of 6th dan in the summer of 2024, has 21 years of experience in karate and exercise instruction.

The response to this new offering has been positive. “People seem excited we are going to have a class geared toward them.”

The class will meet from 3:15-3:45 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The dojo offers two free classes for people to experience the instruction and environment before committing. There is no pressure to enroll.

A one-hour adult “Kick Fit” class for ages 14+ is offered for those looking for something more intense. A circuit training class, it includes lifting weights, basic calisthenics and punching the bag.

“Everyone is so inviting and kind,” said Tapia. “Seniors are welcome to that class as well. We have some in their 60s now who I think may also take the senior class.”

Kick Fit is offered at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

The dojo is offering a back-to-school special for all children and youth classes. Enrollment for September will be $50 rather than $80 and it will include a free uniform.

Contact the dojo to schedule for information the price for adult offerings and to schedule your first class. Enrollment is offered year round.

The dojo is located at 4355 N.C. 211, Ste. E in Seven Lakes and can be reached at  (910) 673-5370 or goshindojo7lks@yahoo.com

“Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone,” said Tapia. “What you see on TV is not what you get. We are very laid back. We are accommodating. You should give it a shot.”
