The Moore Humane Society has broken ground on a new building off N.C. 22 near the Moore County Airport, allowing the organization to expand its services and continue its mission.
The new building, costing about $16 million, has a future footprint of more than 21,000 square feet on approximately 12 acres.
Jocelyn Servick and her husband, Gary Steinhafel, are the benefactors of the project. Together they toured 20 different shelters and always received the same feedback from workers and volunteers.
“At the end of the tour I said, ‘If you had to do something different, what would you do?’” said Servick. “First thing they all said was, ‘We don’t have enough storage.’”
With this in mind, the new building will come equipped with a basement and elevator to store all of the pet-related needs of the shelter animals. Early estimates and plans show that the new facility will be able to accommodate as many as 18 dog kennels and eventually a veterinary clinic on-site.
“We want to enhance our services for a better experience for the animals, our staff and the community,” said Corky Kern, president of Moore Humane Society. “We want to create new programs and enhance the ones we have.”
