St. Joseph of the Pines to Award Middle School Scholarships at St. John Paul II Catholic School

St Joseph of the Pines

St. Joseph of the Pines has renewed its partnership with St. John Paul II Catholic School in Southern Pines for middle-school scholarships at the school in memory of Bishop F. Joseph Gossman, Bishop Emeritus of Raleigh.

SJP will award two rising sixth grade students residing in Moore County with three years of full tuition, excluding transportation to and from school, to cover middle school learning at SJPII.

“We have a wonderful relationship with St. Joseph of the Pines, one that we wish to maintain and nurture,” said SJPII Principal John Donohue. “In our parish school we educate the whole child, in Mind, Body and Spirit. These scholarships will go a long way in helping us fulfill this aspect of our mission.”

In addition to a completed application, candidates must write a 300- to 500-word essay, provide documentation of an A/B grade average for the current school year, and submit two reference letters, one of which should be from a current teacher whereas the other one may be from a personal acquaintance such as a family friend, pastor, or coach.

“We want to hear how attending St. John Paul II Catholic School will change a student’s life,” said Lori Portfleet, president at St. Joseph of the Pines. “We’re looking for what a private school education means to the applicant. This partnership is a natural extension of our faith-driven missions.”

The Gossman Scholarship will be granted for the 2018-2019 academic school year and is renewable for the following two years provided the student maintains an A/B grade average. The deadline for applications is March 1.

“This year our theme is ‘For me to live is Christ,’“ Donohue said. “With this theme we strive to live and act with Christ as the focal point of the school and in our thoughts, words and actions. Partnering with another faith-based institution is a natural extension of our theme.”
