PINEHURST – FirstHealth of the Carolinas will expand its neurosurgery team when Board Certified Neurosurgeon James B. Walker, M.D., joins Cynthia Z. Africk, M.D., and Michael D. Fromke, M.D., this month.
“I jumped at the opportunity to partner with Drs. Africk and Fromke,” says Dr. Walker. “I am looking forward to joining this exceptional team and providing quality care to this region.”
Dr. Walker attended Auburn University undergrad, where he graduated with high honors. He earned his medical degree (M.D.) from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Ala., and his neurosurgery residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., where he was also chief resident of the program.
Dr. Walker spent a year as a Neurosurgery Instructor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where, during his time there, he developed the first described training device for minimally invasive spine surgery, as well as authoring multiple neurosurgical publications.
He has served as both president and treasurer of the Mississippi Neurosurgery Society, on the Board of Directors of the Baptist Memorial Group, and on the Board of Directors for the University of Mississippi Medical Center Alumni Society. He is also a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Walker has relocated to North Carolina with his wife and three children from Oxford, Miss., where he spent the last seven years in private practice, where he practiced general neurosurgery with a focus on minimally invasive spine surgery and surgery for intracranial brain tumors.
Additionally, while in Oxford, Dr. Walker provided neurosurgery consultations for Ole Miss Athletics where he treated sports related injuries including concussions, spinal cord injuries and herniated discs.
A sports and outdoors enthusiast, Dr. Walker is looking forward to making his new home with his family in the Sandhills area and enjoying all that this area has to offer.
“My wife, Laurie, and I have always envisioned raising our children in the Carolinas,” he says. “With all that the Sandhills has to offer, we are looking forward to getting outdoors and hiking, gardening, fishing and more.”
