Contractors with the state Department of Transportation continue their work to clear land that will be used to widen N.C. 211 from N.C. 73 to Holly Grove School Road. Land clearing began in earnest in February, including a large swath of land outside the gates of McClendon Hills. Residents noted smoke through the neighborhood as debris was burned. Further east, workers removed the gas tanks from the closed Short Stop gas station at the corner of 211 and Seven Lakes Drive (below). Widening work is expected to begin in earnest next year after the U.S. Open in June and take about three years to complete.
