4th Annual Race of the Pines
Participate in the kick-off event for the Salute Our Veterans Weekend organized by the Veteran Golfers Association. The annual golf cart race will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the Pinehurst Harness Track. The Race of the Pines is an annual fundraiser benefiting veterans. Enjoy a fun-filled day of golf cart races. The celebrity judges are Richard Petty and Phil Ford. There will be a parachuter show, Southern BBQ Network BBQ competition, Kentucky Derby party, beer festival, live music and good food. 12th Annual Southern Pines Veterans Parade
The annual parade in celebration of veterans and their families takes place on Saturday, Nov. 9 in downtown Southern Pines on Broad Street. The opening ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. and the parade begins at 10 a.m. The Skydiving Angels of the Children of Fallen Heroes Parachute Team will perform a jump while carrying the American flag and the Bandit Flight Team will make a flyover.
Veterans Day Ceremony
Sponsored by the Moore County Veterans Memorial Inc. and the Moore County Veteran Service Office, this annual ceremony will be held at 12 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the Moore County Veterans Memorial (1020 Carriage Oaks, Carthage). Field of Honor Ceremony
The community is invited as the Vietnam Veterans of America, Moore County Chapter 966 holds its annual Field of Honor ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. at the West End Fire House (N.C. 211/73, West End). The Field of Honor Ceremony is for those veterans living and who have passed and includes the service of our War Dogs. Union Pines High School NROTC will provide the Honor Guard and there will be patriotic music and readings. The names on the 475 flags will be read and a ship’s bell will ring at the reading of the names of the deceased veterans on the flags. Arrive early and bring lawn chairs. The flags will be displayed starting Nov. 9, and taps will be played at sunset daily.
Veterans Day Service
The Sandhills Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will conduct its annual Veterans Day Service at the Community Presbyterian Church (25 Everette Road, Pinehurst) at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. Opening music will begin with a bagpiper followed by the 82nd Airborne Brass Quintet. The invocation and benediction will be delivered by Reverend Rod Stone. The keynote address will be made by Chaplain (Major) Christopher Schafer, followed by the annual Quilts of Valor presentation.
