Meet the Candidates!
2018 N & S Board Candidates
(Candidate for SLLA Board of Directors)
Family and personal information:
My wife, Becky, and I have been married for 38 years. We have three children, ages 32-37, and three grandchildren ages 4-12. We both grew up in Stone Mountain, Ga, a small town just outside of Atlanta but since being married have lived on all three coasts of the United States. We moved to Seven Lakes, on the north side, in the spring of 2015 and are very happy to have found this pleasant and valuable community.
Education and Career:
I graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Marine Science and a commission as an Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1984 I graduated from the Navy’s flight school and received my wings as a Naval Aviator. I retired after 28 years of service from the Coast Guard. As a pilot I flew both Coast Guard fixed wing aircraft and helicopters in support of search and rescue as well as law enforcement missions. My career as an officer in the CG provided a broad base of experience including, facilities management, training and standards enforcement, Federal Hearing officer adjudicating federal law, and Commanding Officer of a large Coast Guard Facility.
I was appointed to the SLLA Board of Directors in the summer/fall of 2016. I am currently the president of the board of directors and head of the Recreation Committee.
My thoughts on the purpose of the Board of Directors and why am I running for the Board
The duties and responsibilities of the Board are clearly defined in section V of the By-Laws. My interpretation of section V is as follows: the board of directors is to manage the business of the Association in accordance with the desires and best interest of the Members of the Association.
This is a wonderful community that represents a very real value monetarily, and personally to me and the rest of my fellow members. To continue to be and to enhance this real value effective management must exist. I believe the ground work for effective management is being put in place recently. I am running for reelection to the Board because I would like to continue to be part of making this happen.
My name is Kim Doolittle, and my wife Valerie and I moved to Seven Lakes North in November 2015, after spending most of my life in the snowbelt of upstate NY.
I have recently retired from my position as an Associate Partner with IBM, where I was a consultant in their Global Business Services group. Through my 40+ years in consulting, I have helped most of the Fortune 100 corporations improve their operations through optimizing their financial and supply chain operations, and I bring that experience to my role on the Board at Seven Lakes.
As the current Treasurer of the Board, I look forward to the opportunity to continue to keep our community improving, while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Over the past year, we have been primarily focused on getting our financials in good shape, and as of last November, we have finally been able to resolve all the outstanding financial issues from the past several years. In addition, we have been able to provide funding for lake and dam repairs for Lake Sequoia, engaging a certified Dam Engineer to do an assessment of all the dams in the community, renegotiated our contract with CAS to provide lower cost over the next 3 years, and have committed to constructing a fishing pier to allow easy access for the many anglers in the community.
With the budget proposal for the upcoming year, we have been able to allocate additional funds for some long-deferred maintenance items, without having to dip into our reserves. We still have a concern with our reserves (savings accounts) being below the recommended levels, and will work closely with the rest of the board and the community to bring these up to where they should be while minimizing the financial burden on the community members. With your support, I’m hoping we can continue to improve our community while keeping the costs to the community members reasonable.
I am Ann Turner I’m married to Danny Bowers and Have One Daughter and 2 Step daughters and 2 step sons. 4 grand kids.
I have lived in 7 lakes since 2015 but bought a lot back in 2007 and have been boating on Lake Sequoia since that time. We fell in love with the community and looked for a house and finally found the one we are in now and love living here.
I graduated from Northwest College with an associate of science degree then transferred to University of Wyoming and received my bachelor’s degree in Molecular biology. I then was accepted into the Colorado State University Veterinarian program and graduated and move to Fayetteville, NC.
In January of 2006 Danny and I opened Small Animal Emergency Services in Aberdeen. In 2009 we moved to our new building in Vass. We now have 22 employees. We also opened Lakehouse Bar and Grill in 7 Lakes 5 years ago.
I have been serving on the Board as ARB head since October of 2016 and have found it very fascinating. The present ARB committee is hard working. They take their positions very seriously. They are knowledgeable and have helped the members make good decisions when doing projects. They try very hard to make sure they not only meet the specs for the association but also not cause problems that have to be corrected later.
I wanted to be on the board to try and assure we maintain a beautiful and safe place to live. It seems the rules and regulations usually work pretty well and in my opinion it is the duty of the board members to assure they do work, while keeping the homeowners wishes and best interests in mind. This is the first board I have served on.
I love to compete on 2 of my horses in Dressage. I also like running and going to our gym here in the community.
My name is Amber Johnson. I am native to the area and have lived in our community for almost four years. I served our country in the U.S. Air Force for four years on active duty and three years in the Air National Guard. I have served in various places around the world and here at home during natural disasters.
I have a BS in Accounting and have worked in the public and private sector for nineteen years in various areas of accounting and finance including budgeting and audit. I have 14 years of management experience and currently manage software consultants.
I believe that Seven Lakes is a wonderful place to live and has much to offer. I want to use my experience in community, teamwork, project management, security, procurement, and finance to serve our community while making sound decisions for the betterment of us all. I want to listen to the matters important to our members and use your opinions to forge progress, change, and improvement for our community.
As examples, I hope to work towards a disaster plan that provisions for the needs of our members who may be most impacted during disastrous times such as severe or inclement weather. I’d also like to work to provide services to accommodate members during those times. In addition, I will work towards bringing the community together across age gaps, socioeconomic status, and hobbies through activities that we can all share in; while maintaining fiscal responsibility and ensuring we enjoy a healthy return on monetary and personal investments in our community.
As Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”
Thank you for the opportunity to share a little about myself. I hope you give me the opportunity to serve you. I would like to be your voice.
