Hugger Mugger Brewing Company, located in Downtown Sanford, is currently reaching out to Moore County, including those in Seven Lakes.
Tim Emmert and David McComas founded Hugger Mugger about a year ago when they decided to share their custom brews with locals.
Tim has been living in Moore County for the past eight years and currently resides in Carthage. He worked for the county for several years and helped to found Sandhills Farm to Table.
Tim started home brewing ten years before diving into Hugger Mugger and is fascinated with the history, culture, and science that accompany the brewing experience.
David got an early start in his brewing career. At the age of twelve, a family member explained how to make ale at home using yeast.
David made a concoction using orange juice and stuck it in a friend’s closet. It wasn’t long before he forgot about it. After some time, it exploded, ruining a portion of the closet.
“That’s when I learned to do drywall,” David said.
Since then, David has been brewing for family and friends.
Tim and David met in September 2015 when a consultant in Asheboro suggested that they meet one another. They instantly hit it off and decided to create an atmosphere that was friendly, inviting, and safe for the whole family.
“[Breweries don’t focus as much on] families and women,” David said.
“This space is good for families with kids, professionals, retirees, etc,” Tim said. “Folks who come into this tap room are pretty representative of the community.”
The men intentionally designed the room without any televisions so that folks could focus more laughing and communications.
“Humans are social animals,” David said. “We wanted to create a comfortable environment and increased sense of community. We want to celebrate life and get back to what’s important.”
When it comes to events such as birthday parties, Hugger Mugger is committed to working with clients to make the event a success.
“We want people to use this space,” David said. “It’s a fun space. We want to make clients happy.”
“We want to know how we can help you with the event. How can we make that day the best? We’ll do anything in our power to make our customers happy,” Tim said.
With such events, costumers are welcome to bring their own food. Hugger Mugger also features different food trucks every night.
David and Tim are currently working on new packaging for their brewing production. They plan to put their beer on the market at locations such as Lowes Foods and Piggly Wiggly.
“We want to expand regionally and grow our roots in the community,” David said. “Stop by and get a beer.”
During Hugger Mugger’s first year of operation, David and Tim have bonded as business owners and together they brewed about thirty different recipes.
“We have very complimentary skill sets,” Tim said. “I’ve never met someone who is so in tune with their environment.”
“Tim is very original and pays attention to detail,” David said. “We’re very supportive and laugh at our mistakes. We learn from them.”
As they continue into their second year of business, David and Tim hope to pursue balance and harmony within their beers. They hope to reach unique flavors that are not overwhelming for consumers.
