A Successful Story Walk

On Saturday, October 24th, Seven Lakes North & South hosted their first Story Walk.

The Story Walk was led by Val Doolittle whose husband, Kim, is currently president of the board and in charge of the Recreational Committee.

The featured story was “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything” which told the story of an old woman who went for a walk in the woods where she encountered spooky events – a perfect Halloween story.

The story was aimed at children ages 4-7, providing an opportunity for them and their families to dress up in celebration of Halloween.

Val was inspired by her librarian friend in Minnesota who used Story Walks to get children to participate in reading throughout the library.

“I thought, ‘What a great idea,’ since we can social distance,” Val said.  “I proposed that we do kind of a Halloween-themed Story Walk and encourage kids to dress up in costume.”

The Story Walk began at the Landowners Office and guided young readers and their families around community property.  Posts were spaced apart with a page or two on each.

Seven families participated in the event, and the Doolittles hope that more families will attend in the future.

A second Story Walk will take place on Saturday, November 21st at 10:00am at the Landowners Office – open to all North/South Side residents.  Rain date will be Sunday, November 22nd.  Val chose for the starting time to be 10:00am so that young ones can participate before tiring out for a nap time.

The story will be “Cranberry Thanksgiving” by Harry and Wende Devlin which features a recipe in the book.

“It’s an interesting Thanksgiving story,” Kim Doolittle said.

Families will be sent off distanced apart from one another to see where the story takes them.  It’s an opportunity to safely get outdoors, have fun, and dress up in costume.

Those who wish to participate may sign up by emailing the office at sllareception@casnc.com.
