Show Your Costume At The Story Walk!

Sadie, Kara, and Lilly

On Saturday, October 24th at 10:00am, Seven Lakes North & South will be hosting a Story Walk for resident children ages 4-7 as an opportunity to get dressed up and have fun while being socially distanced.

Kim Doolittle, Board President, is in charge of the Recreational Committee.  With the approach of Halloween, his wife Val wanted to have something for the community children to do that allowed them to dress up and have fun.

“You can absolutely dress up!  If you have a cute Halloween costume, you can get more than one night’s wear out of it,” Val said.  “We encourage folks to wear costumes and just come with their imaginations and have fun.”

Val was inspired by her librarian friend in Minnesota who used Story Walks to get children to participate in reading throughout the library.

“I thought, ‘What a great idea,’ since we can social distance,” Val said.  “I proposed that we do kind of a Halloween-themed Story Walk and encourage kids to dress up in costume.”

The Story Walk will begin at the landowners office and guide young readers and their families around community property.  Posts will be spaced apart with a page or two on each.

The featured story will be “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything.”  As the old woman walks through the spooky woods, she has strange encounters.

“Children are encouraged to do what action is in the story,” Val said.  “When she runs into shoes on her walk, the shoes go, ‘Clomp, clomp,’ and the gloves go ‘Clap, Clap.’  Hopefully they will stop or clap and participate with the story.”

Families will be sent off distanced apart from one another to see where the story takes them.  It’s an opportunity to safely get outdoors, have fun, and dress up in costume.

Val chose for the starting time to be 10:00am so that young ones can participate before tiring out for a nap time.

“We want them to be able to participate,” she said.

The book is targeted at children ages 4-7, although all ages are welcome to participate.

The rain date for this event will be Sunday, October 25th at 10:00am.  Should the Story Walk be a success, another will likely be planned in November.

Those who wish to participate may sign up by emailing the office at sllareception@casnc.com.
