Shelly Coble, R.N., has been recognized as a DAISY Award winner by FirstHealth of the Carolinas.
Coble, who works in the Intermediate Surgical Unit, was nominated by the spouse of a patient.
“This sweet soul has been our saving grace during the most difficult time in our lives. My husband and I only have each other and have been married 45 years, so we are very close,” the wife wrote in her nomination letter.
“Shelly fixed me a care package and had it delivered to my husband’s room. Not knowing anything about how to get around the hospital, Shelly has taken us in, made us feel loved, cared for and safe. She is a shining star and is an example of a wonderful human being as well as a wonderful nurse.”
Jessica Maloy, R.N., nurse manager of CVT/ISU, said going above and beyond is the norm for Coble.
“Shelly is a great nurse because of the extra effort she puts forth to connect with patients and their families,” Maloy said. “Shelly understands that her patients are often going through difficult times, but she also knows she can help them see the light at the end of the tunnel and find hope.”
The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was established by the Daisy Foundation, a not-for-profit, based in Glen Ellen, Calif. The foundation was started by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.
The care Barnes and his family received from nurses inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients’ families. Today, there are more than 2,800 health care facilities in all 50 states and 17 other countries honoring their nurses with the DAISY Award.
FirstHealth of the Carolinas, which includes Moore Regional Hospital, Moore Regional Hospital – Richmond, Moore Regional Hospital – Hoke and Montgomery Memorial Hospital, recognizes an extraordinary nurse each month and has since 2014.
