North Side residents Dave and Laura Nielsen hosted a Vacation Bible School (VBS) from Thursday, August 9th through Saturday, August 11th at the Chapel in the Pines.
The VBS had children ranging from four to twelve years old. About twenty-three children attended.
It was the first VBS that Dave and Laura had ever hosted. It lasted for two-and-a-half hours on Thursday and Friday and all day on Saturday.
The theme was called “Ideas Inc.” and was centered around the story of creation.
“We wanted to mirror the story of creation,” Dave said.
“We started with the seven days of creation and centered around that,” Laura added.
In addition to learning about creation, the children learned to use their own imaginations to create.
They created their own songs and invented their own meals by putting different toppings on pizza, sandwiches, and tacos.
The children were also informed that the Chapel was planning to build a playground. They were asked
to each design their own plans of what they playground should look like.
“[They were encouraged to] really think outside of the box,” Laura said.
The VBS was considered to be a success with the help of a large group of volunteers, including Mary Ann O’Brian who “saved the day with her guitar.”
“The first day we were ahead of schedule, and the second day we were behind,” Laura said. “Everyone hung in there and had flexibility.”
After a long several days of working with children and organizing, Laura and Dave were excited about what they had accomplished.
“It was so fantastic,” Laura said.
