Union Pines High School Key Club members Jackson Carmichael, Saraya Alston and Derek Norton recently received scholarships from the Kiwanis Club of Seven Lakes.

The scholarships are sponsored by the family of Fred R. Seufert, a longtime Kiwanis member, in his memory. Carmichael was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship, while Alston and North each received $500 awards.

Carmichael is planning to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, focusing on the humanities with a study abroad.

Alston will begin her studies at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte to pursue a culinary degree. Norton, who was unable to attend the ceremony, plans to attend N.C. State University and major in

bioprocessing science.

During their time at Union Pines, all three students served their school and community by participating in many Key Club service activities. The Kiwanis Club of Seven Lakes is proud of these students and all members of the Key Club at UPHS and grateful to their advisor, Lisa Murphy.
